This listing is for a vintage Kikko-ware kabuto with box made around 30-40 years ago. The box has been glazed a rich glossy brown and glazed a peach colour on the interior. It also features a gold glazed family crest on the front of the box. The kabuto sits on top of the box when being displayed, or it can be dismantled and stored inside of the box when not in use. The kabuto horns are detachable and there is a golden dragon between the horns. The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom of the box, as well as on the interior of the helmet. Sorry but no box for this one.
Kikko-ware refers to pottery produced in Osaka Prefecture. The founder, Yoshimukai Shogetsu I, studied Raku pottery making in Kyoto and brought this knowledge back to Osaka. He built his own kiln and began producing tea utensils in the same manner as Aka-Raku. Towards the end of the 1800s, Minpei potters began glazing their pieces a brilliant green colour. This had a profound effect on the kilns in the Osaka area, and before long they were producing tea utensils glazed a beautiful vivid green. Kikko potters went on to produce a whole new palette of colours, each one brighter than the next, and these glazes still maintain the same popularity today.
