This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware ashtray made around 20 years ago.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with hand-painted bell flowers over thick white glaze. Bell flowers are one of the traditional seven flowers of autumn often depicted in haiku, kimono and scrolls. Ogata Kenzan, one of the greatest potters of the Tokugawa era, used this motif to decorate tea ware and tableware, and it’s still a very popular style of decoration today.  This piece also comes with a small wooden crate which can be used to hold the ashtray, cigarettes, and a lighter.  It comes with its original paper storage box.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
