This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by the highly regarded and very well-known Rokubei kiln in Kyoto. It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with hand-painted bell flowers over a panel of white glaze. Bell flowers are one of the traditional seven flowers of autumn often depicted in haiku, kimono and scrolls. Ogata Kenzan, one of the greatest potters of the Tokugawa era, used this motif to decorate tea ware and tableware, and it’s still a very popular style of decoration today. The signature of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile about the Rokubei lineage. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Kiyomizu Rokubei Gama was founded in 1771 and is now in its eighth generation. They are best known for their high quality okimono and tableware, and these works are sold at high end department stores throughout Japan. Rokubei III made a name for himself after he became inspired by Modernism and began to produce art nouveau pieces. He was greatly affected by cultural trends and this inspired him to produce more western style pieces such as coffee cups, and tea cups with handles. This was the kiln’s first foray into the tableware market. Since then they have won a plethora of awards at prestigious competitions like the Nitten Exhibition. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
