This listing is for a splendid Kiyomizu-ware nesting crane okimono made by the highly esteemed Kiyomizu Rokubei Gama. It is decorated with white glaze, and its tail feathers trimmed with black. It has a red crown and the bird’s beak is coated in clear glaze. The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a signed stamped wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the kiln.

Kiyomizu Rokubei Gama was founded in 1771 and is now in its eighth generation. They are best known for their high quality okimono and tableware, and these works are sold at high end department stores throughout Japan. Rokubei III made a name for himself after he became inspired by Modernism and began to produce art nouveau pieces. He was greatly affected by cultural trends and this inspired him to produce more western style pieces such as coffee cups, and tea cups with handles. This was the kiln’s first foray into the tableware market. Since then they have won a plethora of awards at prestigious competitions like the Nitten Exhibition. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.

Japanese okimono figurines are decorative items used for display purposes. There are those for religious purposes, junishi animals for commemorating the Japanese astrological calendar, and those depicting auspicious symbols such as ise ebi, cranes, foo lions and tortoises. Auspicious symbols and junishi are made to usher in the New Year. They are often displayed in shops, restaurants, people’s homes, and tea rooms. The okimono in this listing depicts a crane, an auspicious symbol for long life.
