This listing is for a set of five Kiyomizu-ware tea plates made around 30-40 years ago by distinguished potter Kiyomizu Rokubei VI.  They are wheel-thrown and made of high-fired stoneware clay.  Each piece is hand-painted and decorated with blue, gold and iron oxide plant motifs over a panel of white glaze.  The plates also feature light grey glaze and semi-transparent white glaze.  This set is ideal for any of the four seasons and they are durable enough for daily use.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom of each plate, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.  They also come with a stamped turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the plates are not in use.

Kiyomizu Rokubei VI (1901 – 1980) was the eldest son of Kiyomizu Rokubei V. He graduated from the Kyoto Municipal College of Painting and began studying pottery under his father’s tutelage in 1925. He went on to win major wards at prestigious exhibitions such as the Bunten and Teiten (formerly Bunten) Exhibitions. He also served as a judge at the Nitten awards, this being quite a privilege and only offered to the very best in their field. Perhaps his greatest achievement was becoming a member of the Japan Art Academy, and then being awarded the Order of the Cultural Merit in 1962. This is partly due to the new glazes he created in 1953 and 1971, as well as a new firing technique he invented in 1955. Sadly he passed away in 1980 after collapsing at an exhibition. He has been described as one of the most innovative potters in contemporary Japanese history. Rokubei kiln is now headed by Kiyomizu Rokubei VIII. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
