This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 30-40 years ago.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with an akabeko.  An akabeko is a toy made from papier-mâché that’s shaped and painted to look like a red oxen. The body is hollow and the head bobs up and down when moved. Akabeko originated in the Aizu region of Fukushima, and is probably one of the most recognizable folk crafts from all of Tohoku. The red colour is believed to be lucky and auspicious for warding off smallpox and other childhood illnesses. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with a paper storage box.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.

Sizes

Paper Box:  H.9.9cm (3.8”) x 15.5cm (6.1”) x 15.5cm (6.1”)

Chawan:  H.8.7cm (3.4”) x Dia.12cm (4.7”)

Condition

It has a minor hairline crack which I only noticed it after pouring water into the bowl.  It also has a lightly seasoned interior, and the yellow colour appears to be a part of the glaze and not a stain.
