This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 20 years ago. It is wheel-thrown and decorated with hand-painted bell flowers. Bell flowers are one of the traditional seven flowers of autumn, they’re often depicted in haiku, kimono and scrolls. Ogata Kenzan, one of the greatest potters of the Tokugawa era, used this motif to decorate tea ware and tableware, it’s still a very popular style of decoration today. Please note that this piece is unsigned, and very sorry, no box.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
