This listing is for a large-extra large sized hand-woven tatami mat made of soft reed rushes. Hemp or cotton cord is used to weave rushes together to form a square mat. These little mats are ideal for displaying items such as vases, okimono, chawan, they can also be used as little placemats for tea cups etc. The mat is covered on all four sides by a traditional cotton edge called ‘eri’. The eri in this listing is blue interwoven with gold thread and features a geometric diamond pattern.   Our mats are hand-made in Kanagawa Prefecture using local materials.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WOODEN BEAR ORNAMENT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING, THIS LISTING IS FOR THE MAT ONLY.

*Please note that new tatami has a very strong grassy smell, and this gradually disappears as the tatami ages. Also new tatami is green in colour but it fades to a golden colour as it ages. One interesting thing about tatami is that it absorbs humidity during the hot summer season and releases this moisture again in the winter. This prevents the tatami from becoming mouldy.
