This listing is for a robust nezumi Shino-ware bowl made around 20 years ago by Hanemon Gama.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with landscape scenery.  It has a nice deep shape and a thick and sturdy rim. It is supported by three feet, and would make a nice fruit bowl or serving bowl. This piece is just right for autumn, its beautiful soft colour complements the season perfectly.  The signature of the kiln can be found on the back.

Hanemon Gama is located in Gifu Prefecture and specializes in Shino, Oribe and Ki-Seto tableware.  500 years ago a potter named Kato Shiroemon I began producing pottery in Seto village, and his son carried on the tradition and took the title of second generation potter.  The powerful Daimyo Oda Nobunaga presented the second generation with a potters seal, and he became the official potter for the clan.  The second generation’s son went on to open Hanemon Gama, and to this day they are still using the traditional methods from over 400 years ago. They are best known for their seasonal pieces depicting ume blossoms, autumn grasses, and various seasonal flowers.  Hanemon Gama was officially designated as a leading producer of traditional wares by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and cannot be used in your own listings.

Shino-ware is stoneware coated with a white feldspar glaze. It is grouped with Seto-ware and Oribe-ware and is collectively known as Mino-ware. Shino-ware is characterized by red scorch marks and the surface is dotted with small pin holes. Simple designs using iron oxide are applied first and these are later coated with the feldspar glaze. Pieces can be grey, red, or white; owing to how thick or thin the feldspar is applied, and also how the atmosphere of the kiln has affected the high iron content. The actual production method may also lend a hand in this. Pieces are generally fired at lower temperatures and allowed a slow cooling process. This produces the wonderful crawling pattern that Shino-ware is well known for.

Nezumi-shino refers to grey coloured Shino-ware. Shino pieces can be grey, red, or white; owing to how thick or thin the feldspar is applied, and also how the atmosphere of the kiln has affected the high iron content. The name nezumi comes from the Japanese word for mouse.
