He began carving in 1973 and his devoted his entire career to producing high quality Miyajima wares. His work expressed the scenery of Itsukushima Shrine as well as the plants that grow naturally on Miyajima. He also launched a special cat design just prior to his passing in 2021. Miyajima-bori refers to woodcarving from Miyama in Hiroshima Prefecture. During the Kamakura Period carpenters from Kyoto came to the area to restore Itsukushima Shrine, but it wasn’t until later that a sculptor by the name of Hagii Shosai from modern day Yamanashi Prefecture introduced what we now know as Miyajima-bori. Hagii introduced wood turning and techniques for crating artistic pieces. These days local craftspeople fashion trays, kashiki sweets containers and souvenirs out of locally sourced wood. Miyajima pieces are usually decorated with the torii gate from Itsukushima Shrine, as well as deer, monkeys and flowers. It was designated as national traditional craft in 1982, and Hirokawa was the only Intangible Cultural Property of Miyajima up until his passing two years ago.
