This listing is for a large and rather splendid Shino-ware vase made around 30-40 years ago by noted potter, Kuwabara Kosaburo V.  It is a wheel-thrown, white-glazed stoneware vase featuring majestic cranes in flight depicted in underglaze.  This piece is ample is size and the opening is wide enough to accommodate a decent arrangement of flowers.  Kosaburo vases usually have a small stamp on the bottom, we couldn’t see it so it might be covered by glaze.  It comes with its original signed wooden storage box, as well as a turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper.

Kuwabara Kosaburo V works out of Kikyoya Gama located in Gifu Prefecture. The kiln was founded in 1893 and he is the 5th generation master. He is best known for his nostalgic plum and crane ‘snow Shino’ pieces. He has won numerous awards, the most notable being the Gifu Prefecture Governor Award in 1995, and the New Exhibition Excellence Award in 2003. Award winning novelist and Noble prize recipient Kawabata Yasunari talks about one of Kuwabara’s snow Shino chawan in his prize winning novel ‘Snow Country’. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Shino-ware is stoneware coated with a white feldspar glaze. It is grouped with Seto-ware and Oribe-ware and is collectively known as Mino-ware. Shino-ware is characterized by red scorch marks and the surface is dotted with small pin holes. Simple designs using iron oxide are applied first and these are later coated with the feldspar glaze. Pieces can be grey, red, or white; owing to how thick or thin the feldspar is applied, and also how the atmosphere of the kiln has affected the high iron content. The actual production method may also lend a hand in this. Pieces are generally fired at lower temperatures and allowed a slow cooling process. This produces the wonderful crawling pattern that Shino-ware is well known for.
