Maeda Hosen (b.1959) is a Kyo-ware potter and second son of master potter Maeda Masanori from Goun Gama. Goun Gama was established during the early Showa period by Maeda Santaro, and Maeda Masanori became the second generation master. Masanori’s eldest son Kiyohan succeeded as the third generation master, and Hosen opened his own kiln, Antoku Gama, in 1995. He studied at Goun Gama under Masanori, and also under master sculptor Yamamoto Kakuji (1915-2000) at the Kyoto City University of Arts. He is a member of the Kyoto Arts and Artists Association, and the Japan New Craft Federation. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
