This listing is for a beautiful Utsutsugawa-ware vase made around 20-30 years ago by the highly esteemed potter, Maeda Taishou.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with a beautiful white egret over threads of cream coloured slip.  This piece is high-fired and has a glazed interior.  The opening is wide enough to accommodate a decent sized bunch of flowers, and the signature of the potter can be found on the bottom.

Maeda Taishou (b.1937) is an Utsutsugawa and Arita-ware potter and first generation master of Taimei Gama in Kyushu.  In 1963 his work was selected for the prestigious Nitten Fine Arts Exhibition, and in 1982 he received the Special Selection Award at the 14th Nitten Exhibition.  One year later he received the Saga Art and Culture Award at the 15th Nitten Exhibition, and in 1984 he was invited to become a judge at the 6th Japan New Craft Exhibition (which he continued to do for the next 15 years).  In 1987 he once again received the Special Selection Award at the 19th Nitten Exhibition, and four years later he was invited to become a judge at the 23rd Nitten Exhibition.  In 1992 he became a member of the Nitten Fine Arts Association, and he received recognition from the Saga Prefectural Board of Education (Art).  In 1996 he received the 18th Japan New Craft Exhibition Ministry of Education Award, and the Saga Prefecture Governors Award (for Art and Culture) three years later.  In 2007 he was inaugurated as a Nitten Councillor, and in 2008 he became President of Saga Ceramics Association.  In 2011 he was appointed Vice President of the Japan New Craftsperson Federation.  He also served as President of the Kyushu New Craftsperson Federation, and was an Advisor for the Saga Ceramics Society and Arita Ceramics Association.   **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Utsutsugawa-ware refers to pottery produced in the old Hizen province located in modern day Nagasaki prefecture. It’s very thin-bodied, like porcelain, and the clay highly refined despite being rich in iron and dark in colour. It’s a very sophisticated stoneware and often referred to as the Kyoto pottery of Hizen by those in the know.
