This listing is for a pair of Natsuyoshi-ware yunomi tea cups made around 30 years ago by Mano Gazan.  They are wheel-thrown and feature a combination of brown, white and blue-green glaze over a yellow Irabo style glazed base.  The cups have natural ash glaze drips trailing down the sides, and they are made of high fired stoneware clay. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom of each cup, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.  They also come with a Japanese language profile about the potter.  * THESE CUPS ARE QUITE SMALL, PLEASE CHECK THE MEASUREMENTS CAREFULLY BEFORE PURCHASING.

Natsuyoshi-ware refers to pottery produced in the Tagawa district in Fukuoka, Kyushu.  Not much is known about this particular style of pottery, however it was established by Mano Gazan around 50 years ago.  Mano’s grandfather was an Agano-ware potter, and Mano himself had spent time in Aichi studying Tokoname techniques.  He was invited to visit a German style kiln that opened in Fukuoka, and was fascinated by what he saw.  He moved there to learn more about their firing techniques, and eventually relocated to Tagawa and set up his own kiln.  During the past 50 years he has produced various types of pottery and experimented with many types of glazes. Most of his wares have some Tokoname or Agano characteristics, and he produces tenmoku glazed pieces as well.  Natsuyoshi-ware is best described as warm in appearance with rustic charm.  Everything is made for daily use and mainly consists of tableware and sake vessels.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
