This listing is for a beautiful Hagi-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Maruyama Toushin.  It is wheel-thrown and coated with two layers of white ash glaze.  The bottom layer is slightly transparent, whilst the second layer is a tad more opaque and in the form of beautiful drips running down the sides.  The top quarter was dipped in glaze, and it was then allowed to flow down the sides to form the magical landscape of drips you see in the photos.  Also the grittiness of the clay has resulted in beautiful Kannyu cracks.  Eventually tea will be absorbed into these natural cracks, and this will allow the chawan to develop a different feel and look over time. The cracks are there to provide water permeability and ventilation, it will help with keeping your bowl clean and in tip top condition.   The seal of the potter can be found near the bottom and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with two wrapping cloths for when the bowl is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile about Hagi-ware and the potter.

Maruyama Toushin is a Hagi-ware potter and master of Yahagi-an Gama.  His work is highly popular among tea practitioners and he has received numerous awards during his career.  His work was selected for the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition, as well as the Western Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition.  He received the Yamaguchi Prefecture Governor's Award and other top awards at the Japan Contemporary Crafts and Arts Exhibition (Chugoku Region Exhibition), and his work was selected for the 6th Contemporary Japanese Crafts and Arts Exhibition.  Maruyama is also a full-time member of the Japan Contemporary Crafts Artists Association.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
