This listing is for a small Mashiko-ware tea light/candle holder made by Fukuro Gama.  It is made of high-fired stoneware clay and shaped to resemble an owl.  It’s also very possible to place citronella candles in the owl to repel bugs during the hot summer months. There is a small opening in the top just big enough to place a tea light sized candle inside. If you are going to be using candles please make sure you have a spike or some kind of holder to support the candle, also you will need a long lighter to get inside if you are burning tea lights.

Mashiko-ware is pottery produced in the area around Mashiko in Tochigi prefecture. It began in the mid-1800s after good quality clay was found in the local area. There was a large demand for everyday cooking vessels in Tokyo so the number of workshops in Mashiko expanded and many craftsmen took up the trade. In the early 1900s Shoji Hamada took Mashiko-ware to a whole new level when he began promoting the folk art movement. Mashiko-ware is probably best known for its brown glazes along with splashes of red, black, green or white.
