This listing is for a splendid Hagi-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Mashita Takashi.  It is made of gritty stoneware clay and features a combination of ‘biwa’ loquat glaze with white glaze trailing down from the rim. This piece also features beautiful kannyu cracks. Eventually tea will be absorbed into these natural cracks, and this will allow the chawan to develop a different feel and look over time. The cracks are there to provide water permeability and ventilation, it will help with keeping your bowl clean and in tip top condition.  This particular chawan was appraised by Fukumoto Sekio, former head priest of Daitokuji Temple, his inscription can be found on the underside of the lid. Daitokuji Temple became closely linked to tea master Sen no Rikyu, thus establishing a link between Daitokuji and the Japanese tea ceremony. Rikyu’s tombstone can be found at the sub-temple Jukoin at Daitokuji, as well as a splendid tea room that he designed. It is this reason that tea ware masters take their wares to the temple to be appraised. This also increases the value rather substantially, and makes such wares ideal collector’s items. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. It also comes with a stamped turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the bowl is not in use, a Japanese language profile paper about the potter, and a paper storage box to protect the tomobako.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
