This listing is for a pair of Hagi-ware yunomi made by Masuno Toka. They are wheel-thrown and feature biwa loquat glaze over a high fired stoneware base. The front of each cup is decorated with a bamboo motif, and the cups have a flared rim and notched foot.  Also these cups are what we call meoto style, meaning they are two different sizes and also referred to as husband and wife cups.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.

Masuno Toka is a Hagi-ware potter and master of Masuno Toka Gama located in the hilly Chinto district in Hagi city.  Masuno primarily produces tableware and specialises in biwa loquat glazed wares.  He sourced his clay from the nearby mountains and processed it by hand.  During his career his work has been selected for several high profile exhibitions.  His work was selected for the Contemporary Crafts Chugoku Exhibition three times, the Yamaguchi Arts and Craft Exhibition four times, and three times at the Hagi City Arts and Craft Exhibition.  Unfortunately Masuno shuttered his store and closed his kiln permanently during the pandemic.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
