This listing is for a Mashiko-ware yunomi made around 30 years ago by Matsubara Naoyuki.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with ‘enso’ circles.  When enso are hand-drawn with one brush stroke, they express a moment when the mind is free.  This piece also features straw ash glaze and is made of high-fired stoneware.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Matsubara Naoyuki (b.1938) is a Mashiko-ware potter and first generation master of Yadake Gama. He studied under the highly regarded Kimura Ichiro (1915-1978), and then began working as an assistant at the kiln of master potter Yagi Kazuo in Kyoto. He then returned to Mashiko and built his own kiln in Mashiko town. He is best known for his white nuka glazed pieces with iron oxide brushwork, and his akae overglaze wares. He has won multiple awards at the Tochigi Prefectural Art and Crafts Exhibition, and he received the Encouragement Award at the International Ceramic Art Exhibition held in Japan. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mashiko-ware is pottery produced in the area around Mashiko in Tochigi prefecture. It began in the mid-1800s after good quality clay was found in the local. There was a large demand for everyday cooking vessels in Tokyo so the number of workshops in Mashiko expanded and many craftsmen took up the trade. In the early 1900s Shoji Hamada took Mashiko-ware to a whole new level when he began promoting the folk art movement. Mashiko-ware is probably best known for its brown glazes along with splashes of red, black, green or white.
