This listing is for an antique fude-tate brush pot made around 120 years ago during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). A fude-tate is for holding calligraphy brushes. Brushes would be rinsed and stored in the pot with their handle down so that the bundles of hair would keep their shape and point. The brush pot in this listing is made of bamboo and the front is decorated with a hand-carved depiction of Daruma. Daruma has become a familiar and beloved figure with an important place in religion, art and folk culture. In Japan he is widely seen as a symbol of good fortune and success through perseverance, so he is commonly depicted on items relating to arts and crafts. This piece came from a private home in Niigata Prefecture and is a smaller sized pot, please check the size carefully before ordering. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BRUSHES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.
