Mikawachi-ware Earthenware Rabbit Okimono

This listing is for a reasonably large Mikawachi-ware earthenware rabbit okimono made around 20-30 years ago by Kakehashi Kumashi.  It was made from a slip mould and the rabbit is painted with a blue vest with a red and white line pattern, and it has a red string around its neck.  During autumn, Japan celebrates the harvest moon festival known as tsukimi.  When the harvest moon appears, people gaze up at the sky hoping to catch a glimpse of the rabbit that lives on the moon.  On a clear night, you can make out the shape of a rabbit busy pounding mochi with a mallet.  The rabbit comes with its original paper box, a black display board, and Japanese information about the potter and Mikawachi-ware.  

Mikawachi-ware is another name for Hirado-ware, and it refers to pottery produced in Nagasaki Prefecture. The body of Mikawachi ware is of fine-grained, extremely white porcelain that is usually decorated with miniature-style paintings of landscapes, trees and flowers.

Condition

It’s in very good condition with no chips or cracks although there is some minor surface wear here and there.
