This listing is for a rather beautiful Kyo-ware chawan made by Miyanaga Korin and dated Heisei 10 (1998). It is wheel-thrown and the flat hira type used during the summer season. Hira chawan are shallow bowls with low sides designed to cool tea down faster. The bowl in this listing is decorated with bamboo and a damselfly. Damselflies and dragonflies signify a change in seasons, and are frequently used to decorate teaware designated for late summer, early autumn. Also once upon a time dragonflies were thought to be spirits of rice plants and an omen for good harvest. The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. It also comes with an outer paper box to protect the tomobako, as well as a stamped turmeric coloured wrapping cloth and a Japanese language profile paper.
Miyanaga Korin (b.1948) is a Kyo-ware potter and the fourth son of Miyanaga Koun. In 1970 he studied under Japanese nihonga painter Takahashi Wako after graduating from university. In 1971 he graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Vocational Training Institute and began studying under his father. He also trained under Kageyama Ryosai and Murata Toka up until 1981 when he became independent. He opened his own kiln and received the name ‘Korin’ from the head priest of Daitokuji Temple. In 2002 he was certified as a Traditional Craftsperson of Kyo-ware, and he received a Special Selection Award at the 5th Japan Traditional Craftsperson Association Exhibition. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
