This listing is for a Banko-ware futaoki made around 20 years ago by noted potter Miyata Hozan IV.  A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki in this listing is wheel-thrown and decorated with 'akikusa' autumn grasses.  It also features white slip brushwork, and is crescent shaped like the moon to coincide with the autumn moon viewing tradition. It comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Miyata Hozan IV (b.1935) is a Banko-ware potter and fourth generation master of Kozan Gama.  Kozan Gama was established during the Edo period by Rakuo I, but later closed by the third generation.  Hozan reopened the kiln and took over the fourth generation in 1967. In 1951 he began studying under Kinoshita Kenzan, and in 1955 he studied under Sato Enju (1926-1989).  In 1959 he apprenticed under Tsuji Shinroku (1905-1970).  During his career he has participated in various exhibitions, and his work was selected for the Ise Jingu Shikinen Sengu ritual held every 20 years.  Moreover he presented a Fukiran bowl to the Takamado Court in 2005.  He is Director of the Yokkaichi Banko Ceramics Association, and a member of the Banko Ceramics Association.   **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Banko-ware refers to pottery made in Mie Prefecture. It is characterized by a dark rusty colour and is made by mixing iron-rich clay with yellow clay. The colour variation is due to low oxygen levels and incomplete combustion when firing. Decorations are generally very simple, and done while the clay is still wet. Banko-ware is well-known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures.
