This listing is for a hand-painted Banko-ware mizusashi made around 20-30 years ago by noted potter, Miyata Yutaka. It is wheel-thrown and features red and white plum blossoms over a hakeme base. Hakeme is a Korean technique of painting white slip onto stoneware with a stiff brush. It is viewed as a simple yet very expressive technique, and even the great Shoji Hamada took to this style and used it in his own work. The glaze colour and plum pattern makes this piece more suited to winter or early spring. The mark of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.
Miyata Yutaka (b.1935) is a Banko-ware potter and fourth generation master of Kozan Gama. He was born in Mie and studied under noted potters Kinoshita Kenzan, Sato Enju, and Tsuji Shinroku. Kozan Gama was established during the Edo period and was closed after three generations. In 1967 it was revived by Miyata and he assumed the title of fourth generation master. One of patrons is Ise Grand Shrine, he produces wares dedicated for use during ceremonies at the shrine. He also donated a bowl to the Takamado branch of the Imperial family, and he serves as Director of the Yokkaichi Banko Ceramic Art Association. Miyata is a member of Banko Ceramics Association, and is best known for his splendid mishima pieces. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Banko-ware refers to pottery made in Mie Prefecture. It is characterized by a dark rusty colour and is made by mixing iron-rich clay with yellow clay. The colour variation is due to low oxygen levels and incomplete combustion when firing. Decorations are generally very simple, and done while the clay is still wet. Banko-ware is well-known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures.
