This listing is for a beautiful sensu fan made by Kyoto folding fan maker Miyawaki Baisenan.  The framework is made of bamboo and the fan is quite sturdy when opened.  It comes with its original paper storage box.

Miyawaki Baisenan was established in 1823 during the Bunsei part of the Edo period (1818-1830). During the Edo period, fan making prospered as one of the "three occupations of Kyoto" and permeated the daily lives of common people.  The first generation of Miyawaki Baisenan hailed from Mino Province and set up shop in the Higashiyama district in Kyoto.  The original store burned down during the Kinmon Incident in 1864 and was rebuilt in its present location.  The third generation was an acquaintance of Japanese painter and calligrapher Tomioka Tessai, and this signaled a change in production.  Folding fans became more decorative and some featured hand-painted designs.  In 1887 the store was rebranded and Tomioka named it ‘Miyawaki Baisenan’.   In 1917 the third generation produced a book summarising knowledge collected from the first generation in the hope that it would preserve traditional techniques for future generations.  The book mentions that Miyawaki Baisenan folding fans pass through the hands of the fan maker 87 times, and that the process is divided into more than 20 steps.  It is said that only products produced domestically by members of the Kyoto Folding Fan Association can be classified as ‘Kyo fans’, and that their quality is unsurpassed.  The Imperial Household Agency are official purveyors of Miyawaki Baisenan, and imperial family members have visited the store in Kyoto.  The store itself operates as a museum providing a rare glimpse of merchant life from the past, as well as some rare artworks dating back to the Edo period.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
