This listing is for an Obayashi-ware yunomi tea cup made around 20 years ago by Mizuno Hideo.  It is wheel-thrown and fired in a noborigama climbing kiln.  The exterior features a pattern of ‘bamboo’ lines over a high-fired stoneware base.  This piece has a lot of charm and is suitable for daily use.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.   *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.

Mizuno Hideo (1932-2014) was an Obayashi-ware potter and fifth generation master of Mizuno Gama.  In 1951 he began studying at the Kyoto Industrial Technology Ceramics Institute, and in 1960 he became a pupil of noted potter Okabe Mineo.  In 1963 his work was selected for the 10th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1964 he exhibited at the 4th New Traditional Crafts Exhibition.  In 1965 he received an award at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, the first of five awards.  In 1968 he became a member of the Japan Kogei Association, and in 1972 he held his first solo exhibition in Nagoya.  In 1980 he held a solo exhibition in Tokyo and in 1996 he held a special exhibition at Komagane Kogen Art Museum.  In 1997 he received the Excellence Award at the New Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1999 he became a judge at the New Traditional Crafts Exhibition.  He also received an award from the Governor of Nagano Prefecture for his contribution to arts and culture.  In 2006 he was designated as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Obayashi-ware refers to pottery produced in Iida city in Nagano Prefecture.  Pottery has been made in this area since ancient times, and glazed pottery has been fired since the 1600s.  A pair of glazed Komainu (guardian dogs) signed in 1609 were kept in the oldest Oayashi-ware kiln in the prefecture.  The current style of Obayashi pottery began in the late Edo period, and the pottery clay and other materials for the glaze are all procured and used from around Obayashi. Feldspars for glazes are sourced from nearby Hachinokura stone, as well as the stones from Ohira Pass to Kiso.  The Mizuno family kiln has been in operation since the Edo period and their techniques have been passed from generation to generation.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Koedo and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
