This listing is for a splendid giyaman tea plate made around 20 years ago by Mizusaki Choju. It is made of glass and the front is decorated with hand-painted green and gold kaede leaves. Kaede is the original name for the Japanese maple tree, and it translates as ‘frog hand’. Maples leaves have been depicted in Japanese art, poetry, and literature for thousands of years. Many traditional Japanese works of art and poems are about the cool wind gently blowing fresh green kaede leaves in summer, or the falling of maple leaves in late autumn. This is a beautiful plate for summer entertaining, or for those of you who practice tea. It comes with its original paper storage box.
Mizusaki Choju (b. Akio 1942) is a veteran giyaman glassmaker. He studied Economics at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo and after graduation started a family business making glass products. He soon found his products to be in high demand and within a short time his interest shifted to making tea utensils. Mizusaki produces mizusashi, natsume, chawan, small kaiseki dishes, as well as high quality tableware. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Giyaman refers to glass products created during the Edo period. At that time Japan was trading with the Dutch and had received beautiful glass products that sparkled like diamonds. Local craftspeople began to mimic the deeply cut glass products they received, and the word giyaman was adopted to describe this new type of glassware. These days, the word giyaman is seldom used except to describe handcrafted pieces reserved for tea practice.
