This listing is for a beautiful hakuji porcelain-ware plate made around 20-30 years ago by noted potter, Morimoto Noboru.  It is hand-painted and decorated with an iron and cobalt underglaze depiction of kobus magnolia blossoms.  Kobus magnolias are often found in temple gardens and bloom in early spring.  They symbolise purity and nobility, and are known for their beautiful scent.  The signature of the potter can be found on the back, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Morimoto Noboru (b.1957) is a Niigata based porcelain-ware potter and ceramic artist.  In 1980 he began studying Tobe-ware pottery techniques in Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku.  He moved to Niigata in 1983 and opened Iroha Gama in the Takidera district of Joetsu city.  In 1999 he held a solo exhibition in Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department store, and another at Niigata Mitsukoshi Department Store one year later.  In 2002 he held another solo exhibition at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department store, and in 2016 he received a Highly Recommended Award at the Niigata Traditional Art and Crafts Exhibition.  Morimoto specialises hand-painted tableware and decorative plates, but he’s also painter and produces sculptural pieces.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hakuji refers to high-fired porcelain that was created by applying transparent glaze to white paste. The technique evolved from those used in China and Korea, and Korean potter Ri Sampei is said to be the first to begin producing porcelain-ware here in Japan. Originally hakuji was simply a base colour for Kakiemon and Nabeshima pieces. It was not until the Meiji Period that people began to appreciate the raw beauty of plain white porcelain. Although simple in appearance it is actually very difficult to fire hakuji pieces without flaws, thus making it very expensive.
