This listing is for a Hagi-ware chawan made around 30 years ago by noted potter, Morishima Isshin.  It is wheel-thrown and features beautiful ‘biwa’ loquat glaze.  Also the grittiness of the clay has resulted in beautiful Kannyu cracks.  Eventually tea will be absorbed into these natural cracks, and this will allow the chawan to develop a different feel and look over time. The cracks are there to provide water permeability and ventilation, it will help with keeping your bowl clean and in tip top condition.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped blue wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.

Morishima Isshin (b.1937) was a Hagi-ware potter and master of Kanbo-an Gama.  He studied under Yoshida Hagien and opened his own kiln in Tamae in 1967.  In 1972 he held a solo exhibition in Saga City, and in 1974 his work was selected for the Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Exhibition (and every year after that).  In 1975 his work was selected for the West Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1976 he created pieces for the memorial service commemorating the first anniversary of the death of Prime Minister, Eisaku Sato.  In 1977 he exhibited tea bowls at the Issui Association Exhibition, one chawan was purchased by the Prime Minister’s office and another by Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo.  In 1978 he exhibited work at the West Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1979 he held a solo exhibition in Kyoto. In 1981 he became a member of the Japan New Craft Artists Chugoku Division, and in 1982 he held a solo exhibition in Utsunomiya.  In 1983 Chief Cabinet Secretary Gotoda Masaharu and Foreign Minister Abe Shinzo purchased tea bowls, and in 1984 he held a solo exhibition at Tokuyama City Kintetsu Department Store.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
