This listing is for a Hagi-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Mukuhara Kashun.  It has a deep well shape and was wheel thrown with gritty stoneware clay. This piece also features beautiful kannyu cracks. Eventually tea will be absorbed into these natural cracks, and this will allow the chawan to develop a different feel and look over time. The cracks are there to provide water permeability and ventilation, it will help with keeping your bowl clean and in tip top condition.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Mukuhara Kashun (b.1949) is a Hagi-ware potter who works out of Furuhata Gama located in Yamaguchi Prefecture. He began studying pottery in 1967, and later became independent and opened his kiln in 1976. In 1971 his work was selected for the Hagi City Art Exhibition, and in 1972 he exhibited at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Exhibition. In 1974 his work was selected for the Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition, and in 1979 he received an award at the Issui Association Exhibition. In 1981 he held his first solo exhibition at the Tokyu Department Store, and in 1985 he held a solo exhibition at Tobu Department Store. In 1994 he received an award at the Tanko Biennale Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition, and he also received a special award at the Tanabe Art Museum Modern Forms in Tea Exhibition (his work has been selected another five times since then). He is a full-time member of the Hagi Pottery Association, and is best known for his range of glazes and innovative tea and tableware.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.

It’s in very good condition with no chips or cracks, however the interior is seasoned with use.
