This listing is for a TINY Karatsu-ware yunomi made around 20 years ago by Nakashima Toshifumi.  It is wheel-thrown and the front features two closed ‘enso’ circles.  When enso are hand-drawn with one brush stroke, they express a moment when the mind is free.  This piece is made of high-fired stoneware clay and is suitable for daily use.  Please note that the cup is very small, please check the measurements carefully before placing your order.

Nakashima Toshifumi (b.1939) Karatsu-ware potter and first generation master of Hobashira Gama.  His interest in pottery began at an early age and he decided to become a potter after completing school.  He began studying at Shinomine Nakazato Gama, as well as under Inoue Manji at the Saga Ceramics Research Institute.  He also became a pupil of Eguchi Souzan where he focused his training on learning traditional glaze techniques.  In 1976 he became independent and opened Hobashira Gama in Kitahata, the birthplace of Karatsu-ware.  His work has been selected for competitions such as the 19th Kyushu New Crafts Exhibition, the Saga Prefectural Art Association Exhibition, as well as consecutive selections for the Kyushu Contemporary Art and Crafts Exhibition.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Karatsu-ware is a style of pottery produced in and around Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, Japan. It’s known for its sturdiness and simple style. This type of pottery is made from clay high in iron and can be undecorated or decorated with an iron-based underglaze, giving an earthy, simple, and natural feeling to the pieces. Karatsu-ware features a rich variety of products, including rice bowls, plates, jars, vases and other general items for everyday living.
