This listing is for a Takayama brand chasen made by Nakata Kizo in Nara Prefecture. It is made of black bamboo and is a tea whisk used by the Mushakoji Senke Kankyuan School, and it’s intended for preparing thin tea. Please note that chasen sold in paper boxes are firmly attached to one end, you need to very carefully but firmly remove it before use. Some of the paper will be stuck on the bottom of the chasen, it can be easily removed after a short soak in warm water. *The Mushakoji Senke Kankyuan school of tea was founded by Ichio Soshu, the second son of grand tea master, Sen no Sotan (1578-1658). Sen no Sotan was Sen no Rikyu’s grandson.
Nakata Kizo (b.1940) is a veteran Takayama tea whisk craftsman born and raised in Takayama. Nakata was born to a farming family, but in order to learn a trade, he apprenticed under a tea whisk maker during his second year of junior high school. After training for about six years, he went to Korea and studied Korean tea utensils and practice. Having acquired various skills, he became independent at the age of 25 and established ‘Chasen no Kisen’ in Takayama. Takayama refers to bamboo tea utensils produced in the Takayama district of Ikoma city in Nara Prefecture. Local craftspeople have been producing bamboo tea utensils since the Muromachi period, and presently this area remains one of the leading producers of chasen in all of Japan. Bamboo is sourced locally and utensils are produced by highly skilled certified artisans. There are three types of bamboo – white, black and susutake soot bamboo.
