This listing is for an attractive Karatsu-ware futaoki made around 20 years ago by distinguished potter, Nakazato Shigetoshi.  A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki featured in this listing is wheel-thrown and decorated with a Arabesque bamboo pattern.  Bamboo is a popular motif because it is one of the three friends of winter.  Bamboo, matsu pine and ume are admired in both Japan and China as they do not wither against the cold of winter.  The signature of the potter can be found near the base, and it comes with its original wooden storage box.   It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.  *PLEASE KINDLY NOTE THAT THE LID IS NOT INCLUDED.

Nakazato Shigetoshi (1930-2015) was a Karatsu-ware potter and a member of the illustrious Nakazato family.  He was the third son of Living National Treasure Nakazato Taroemon XII, and younger brother of Nakazato Taroemon XIII.  He opened Sangen Gama in Karatsu in 1973 and specialized in producing beautiful e-Karatsu and Chosen Karatsu style teaware, vases, and tableware.  He was first selected for the prestigious Nitten Exhibition in 1952, and received an award at the Modern Ceramics Exhibition in 1956.  In 1964 his work was purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and he went on the win the much coveted Blue Ribbon Award at the Nitten Exhibition one year later.  He received the Saga Prefecture Cultural Award in 1985 for his contribution to the field of ceramics, and became a member of the Nitten jury in 1986.  He held many solo exhibitions across Japan, and participated in a Japanese arts and crafts exhibition at the British Museum towards the end of his career.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
