This listing is for a sedge grass ox made around 30-40 years ago. Niigata sedge grass crafts began in the 30's during the Showa era in order for farmers to earn additional income during the off-season. At one time, about 200 people were involved, but now just five people from the Hiramaru Sedge Craft Preservation Society produce woven zodiac animals every year.  Only about 100 animals are produced each year so they are becoming scarce.  The ox in this listing features braided reins and there’s some wire in the framework to make the animal sturdy.  The produce on the ox’s back is made of wood and the legs are secured by small amounts of tape and string.

Condition

It’s in very good condition aside from the tape around the ankles being old and a little discoloured, and there’s some bent straw in the tail.
