This listing is for a Niigata Take and Ishime-nuri lacquerware bowl made around 60-70 years ago. Take-nuri is lacquerware that simulates the appearance of bamboo. Skilled artisans use layers of lacquer to create the distinctive nodes found on bamboo, and they also create the texture of bamboo stalks. The surface is then polished and painted numerous times before the final product is complete. The bowl in this listing is ample in size and features textured black lacquer called Ishime-nuri. Please read below regarding the size and condition of the bowl.
Niigata lacquerware refers to lacquerware products produced in Niigata Prefecture since the early 1600s. The first known authorised dealership was established in 1638, under the name of ‘Wan Dana’. This particular type of lacquerware is characterised by several different styles, and this is due to the introduction of various techniques from different regions across Japan. The take-nuri type simulates the appearance of bamboo, the kinma-nuri type uses gold leaf in its decoration, the isokusa-nuri type resembles the appearance of sea grass, the hana-nuri type uses a process that involves no grinding in between layers, the nishiki-nuri type is decorated with gold patterns, and finally there’s the ishime-nuri type which has a stone like appearance.
