This listing is for a vintage kokeshi doll made about 20-30 years ago.  This particular doll is from Toshogu Shrine in Nikko.  Toshogu Shrine is famous for the three wise monkeys – Mizaru (covering his eyes who sees no evil), Kikazaru (covering his ears who hears no evil), and Iwazaru (covering his mouth who speaks no evil).  The front of the kokeshi features all three monkeys and was probably bought as a souvenir.  The kanji near the base reads as ‘Nikko’. 

Wooden kokeshi dolls are a kind of traditional folk art which originated in Tohoku. Most are brightly-coloured and feature a cylindrical body and perfectly round head. Decorations on newer kokeshi tend to have a coat of lacquer over the top, whilst the older variety’s paintwork tends to be applied on the top of the clear lacquer. Therefore it is possible to smudge or wipe off the paintwork on the older type so take care when cleaning them.

The top monkey has a slightly smudged face, and the red parts of the hair are a little smudged as well.
