This listing is for a Kyo-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Nishio Zuiho.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with kanji for temple wells and drinking wells located at various places around Japan.  The interior of the bowl features a small painted stream, and the bottom of the bowl is glazed with matte brown glaze.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom.

Nishio Zuiho is a Kyo-ware potter born in Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture.  Yokkaichi is home to Banko-ware, and those who wish to hone their skills go to Kyoto to learn glaze and overglaze decorative techniques.  Nishio did just this and eventually made Kyoto his home.  He studied Ninsei techniques under Jogaku I, and opened his own kiln in the Higashiyama district in Kyoto.  He is a full time member of the Japan Ikebana and Teaware Art and Crafts Promotion Committee, and a regular member of the Kyoto Art and Crafts Centre Association.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
