This listing is for an exquisite Tanba-ware vase made around 10 years ago by noted potter, Ogami Takumi.  It is wheel thrown and the front is decorated with an iron glazed depiction of an Ise ebi (spiny lobster) over white slip.  This piece also features transparent celadon glaze, and the rim is wide enough to accommodate a decent sized arrangement of flowers.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.

Ogami Takumi (b.1951) is a Tanba-ware potter and current master of Okuma Gama.  He started making pottery at a young age and first exhibited at the Hyogo Prefectural Exhibition and the Hyogo Prefectural Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1972. In 1974 he moved to Kyoto and began studying under Miyanaga Tozan II and Miyanaga Tozan III, he then returned to Tanba-Tachikui three years later and started working at his family’s pottery business.   In 1979 his work was selected for the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition, and he received the Museum of Modern Art Award at the Hyogo Prefectural Exhibition.  In 1980 his work was selected for the National Prefectural Exhibition, and he was invited to exhibit at the Prefectural Exhibition.  In 1983 he received an award at the Hyogo Prefectural Arts and Crafts Artists Association Exhibition, and in 1984 he exhibited work at the Exhibition of Resident Artists in Hyogo Prefecture.  He exhibited at the same exhibition the following year.  In 1987 he became Chairman of the Arts Department of the Japan Junior Chamber of Commerce, and in 1992 his work was selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Kinki Exhibition (and every year since then).  In 1993 he exhibited at the Tabe Museum of Art Tea Ceremony Forms Exhibition (also in '95 and '99), and in 1994 he received the Encouragement Award at the Tabe Museum of Art Tea Ceremony Forms Exhibition.  In 1997 he held a workshop in Seattle at the Hyogo Culture Week event, and in 1999 he was a judge at the Takasago City Exhibition.  Ogami is currently a member of the Hyogo Prefectural Arts and Crafts Artists Association, and in 2009 he was certified as a Tanba-Tachikui Traditional Craftsman.  From 2011-12 he served as Chairman of the Tanba-Tachikui Ceramic Cooperative Association.  Ogami also formed a group kiln and was one of the initiators of the local pottery festival.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tanba-ware has been produced in the village of Tachikui in Hyogo prefecture for over 800 years. Pine wood is used in the firing process which gives pottery a distinctive ash glaze, although potters often use applied glazes as well for functional items such as jars, sake bottles, and chawan. The clay they use is high in iron content, and it’s made by blending two types together. Tanba Tachikui kilns are of an old style of Korean climbing kiln - half above and half below ground. The potter’s kicking wheel was also imported from Korea, and Tanba potters are well known for their unique technique of kicking the wheel in an anticlockwise direction.

Celadon refers to a type of glaze as well as a specific type of ware, both are characterized by a very pale green, powder blue, or grey-blue colour. The colour largely depends on the presence of iron in the clay and of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze. Firing conditions in the kiln also play a big role in determining colour.
