This listing is for an Ohi-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Ohi Nakamura Choami III.  It is hand-turned and coated in dark caramel coloured ame-yu glaze.  The clay body is visible beneath the glaze and the front features a dark patch of glaze.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Ohi Nakamura Choami III (b.1952) was born in Kyoto and is the third generation master of the Choami family of potters. He graduated from the Nihon University School of Science and Technology with a degree in pharmaceuticals, but returned to Kyoto to learn pottery.  He was primarily interested in glazes, so he studied at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Technical Institute.  He then moved to Ishikawa to train under his grandfather, Ohi Choami I. In 1979 he opened his own kiln and became a member of the Kanazawa City Arts Craft Association.   **Ohi Choami I was born in Ishikawa and studied in Kyoto under master potter, Sawada Muneyama.  He returned to Ishikawa and took up Kutani-ware, however not completely satisfied, he began hand turning pottery on the wheel.  This marked the beginning of the Choami family’s transition to Ohi-ware.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Ohi-ware refers to pottery made in Ohi town in Kanazawa Prefecture.  It is made of soft clay and fired at low temperatures, and features what is known as an ame-yu glaze.  Ohi-ware’s ame-yu glaze is a golden or caramel coloured glaze with a glossy finish.  Ohi-ware is generally shaped by hand and fired in a way not so different from Raku-ware.  The temperature is increased sharply over a short period of time, and the piece is removed from the kiln whilst the glaze is still melting.  This causes the piece to cool down rapidly, thus creating the beautiful rich colour and lustre.
