This listing is for a lightweight ‘oni’ mask intended for Setsubun celebrations.  An oni is a kind of demon or devil regularly depicted in Japanese folklore. On February 3rd, people throw soybeans at oni to drive away evil spirits during the annual Setsubun festival.  Temples and shrines across Japan hold Setsubun festivities where priests and celebrities throw beans, sweets and sometimes cash at energetic crowds of visitors.  Children also throw beans at oni who appear at the front door of their house.  Those oni are usually dad or granddad wearing a mask like the one in this listing.  This particular mask has never been worn and is ready for use.
