This listing is for a pair of Akahada-ware yunomi made around 20 years ago by Oshio Shozan III.  They are wheel-thrown and hand-painted with a typical Nara-e decoration over a transparent white glazed base.   Nara-e motifs are connected to Buddhist scriptures and sutras stored at Shoso-in Repository in Nara, and they’re often used to decorate Akahada-ware pieces.  Both cups are egg shaped and they are two different sizes to make a husband and wife pair. The seal of the potter can be found on the bottom, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.  They also come with a Japanese language profile about the potter.

Oshio Shozan III (b.1947) is an Akahada-ware potter based in Nara Prefecture.  He is a full time member of the Japan Ceramics Association, and he has been nominated for the prestigious Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition eleven times.  His splendid okimono creations are very popular amongst collectors, however he is probably better known for his beautifully painted e-Nara teaware.  He has held many solo exhibitions, and was designated as a traditional craftsman by the governor of Nara prefecture for his contribution in reviving traditional glaze techniques. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and cannot be used in your own listings.

Akahada-ware refers to pottery produced in Nara Prefecture that has a thick round shape, and a pale reddish and white colour. The colour is produced by the unique chemicals used for the glaze. It has a smooth surface and many Akahada pieces are embossed with scenes of people or deer. These scenes are known as Nara-e, which means pictures of Nara.
