This listing is for a vintage Inuyama-ware chawan with shifuku made around 30-40 years ago by Ozeki Sakujuro Toen.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with red and green maple leaves and stylised cherry blossoms.  The combination of leaves and sakura reflect the changing seasons and is a traditional motif used by Inuyama potters.  This piece also comes with a shifuku drawstring bag thus allowing it to be used outdoors.  The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom and it comes with its original wooden storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the kiln.

Inuyama-ware refers to pottery made in the castle town of Inuyama in Aichi Prefecture. It has a 300 year history and was founded by a potter named Ozeki Sakujuro I.  A lot of Inuyama-ware tends to be is characterized by red based designs featuring flowers and autumn leaves.   These designs are said to have started in Tenpo 6 (1836).  Early Inuyama glazes were also similar in appearance to Shino-ware, complete with pinholes dotting the surface.

Ozeki Sakujuro Toen is the family kiln belonging to the highly regarded Ozeki family.  The original Inuyama potter families were Ozeki, Shimaya, and Kato.  In 1912 an official Inuyama group was established, and this consisted of Ozeki, Goto, Aoyama, Katsuno, Ito, Osawa and Yoshino.  Ozeki Sakujuro Toen workshop keeps the traditional style of Inuyama-ware, their style and techniques some 300 years old.  All of their pieces are handmade, hand-painted, and known for their supreme quality and durability.    **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Condition

It’s in very good condition with no chips or cracks, however we recommend airing out the cloth bag.  Also please note that there’s black handwriting on the exterior of the wooden box.
