This listing is for an Inuyama-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Ozeki Sakujuro Toen. It is wheel-thrown and the exterior features iron oxide depictions of bamboo over a light coloured base. This piece is made of high-fired stoneware and has a nice deep shape for whisking. The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with a paper storage box. It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.
Inuyama-ware refers to pottery made in the castle town of Inuyama in Aichi Prefecture. It has a 300 year history and was founded by a potter named Ozeki Sakujuro I. A lot of Inuyama-ware tends to be is characterized by red based designs featuring flowers and autumn leaves. These designs are said to have started in Tenpo 6 (1836). Early Inuyama glazes were also similar in appearance to Shino-ware, complete with pinholes dotting the surface.
Ozeki Sakujuro Toen is the family kiln belonging to the highly regarded Ozeki family. The original Inuyama potter families were Ozeki, Shimaya, and Kato. In 1912 an official Inuyama group was established, and this consisted of Ozeki, Goto, Aoyama, Katsuno, Ito, Osawa and Yoshino. Ozeki Sakujuro Toen workshop keeps the traditional style of Inuyama-ware, their style and techniques some 300 years old.
