This listing is for a pair of antique Imari-ware bowls made about 90-100 years ago. They are hand-painted and the overglaze is slightly raised, thus giving the surface a little texture when you run your fingers over it.  Each piece is decorated with cranes, textile patterns and what is known as the three friends of winter. The three friends of winter are ume, bamboo and matsu pine; all three are highly regarded in both Japan and China as they do not wither against the cold of winter. They are a very popular choice for tableware and textiles, especially around New Year. The Imari mark can be found on the bottom of both bowls.

Imari-ware refers to pottery produced in Okawachiyama Village in Imari town. It is roughly divided into four different types: Iro-Nabeshima, Nabeshima-Sometsuke, Nabeshima-Seiji, and Nabeshima/Koimari. Iro-Nabeshima is characterized by red, yellow and green designs painted on a pure white or blue and white background. Nabeshima-Sometsuke uses indigo blue paint on a white base, Nabeshima-Seiji is pale green or blue-green coloured pottery, and Nabeshima/Koimari is the name given to porcelain produced in the kilns of the Nabeshima clan. Koimari refers to porcelain produced during the Edo and Meiji Periods.
