This listing is for a pair of VERY SMALL Imari-ware mamezara-sized plates dating back to the Meiji Period (1868-1912).  They are antique and decorated with flowers and birds over a white porcelain base.  Mamezara are small plates between 9-12cm in diameter, and they were traditionally used for serving soy sauce or pickles.  This pair would have belonged to a large set of dishes consisting of various sized plates, bowls, cups etc.   They are the perfect size for resting a chasen after whisking tea.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.

Imari-ware refers to pottery produced in Okawachiyama Village in Imari town. It is roughly divided into four different types: Iro-Nabeshima, Nabeshima-Sometsuke, Nabeshima-Seiji, and Nabeshima/Koimari. Iro-Nabeshima is characterized by red, yellow and green designs painted on a pure white or blue and white background. Nabeshima-Sometsuke uses indigo blue paint on a white base, Nabeshima-Seiji is pale green or blue-green coloured pottery, and Nabeshima/Koimari is the name given to porcelain produced in the kilns of the Nabeshima clan. Koimari refers to porcelain produced during the Edo and Meiji Periods.
