This listing is for a pair of Chinese lacquer vases made around 40 years ago. They are made of carved lacquer and are decorated with intricate floral motifs consisting of peonies and arabesque vine patterns. The interior features smooth black lacquer interior and the rims are trimmed with brass. Each vase has a small wooden stand, and they come with their original paper storage box.
Chinese lacquerware has existed for thousands of years, however the technique of carving into thick layers of lacquer began around the 12th century. The process for carving lacquer is extremely time consuming and very complex. First a wooden base is made and then layers of lacquer are applied one by one. Each layer is dried and polished before the next coat is applied. Up to 200 layers are applied before an item is ready to be carved. Traditionally imagery consisted of figures in landscapes, birds and plants, auspicious characters and animals. The lacquer comes from the sap of lacquer trees and I mixed with red from cinnabar and black from Chinese ink and soot.

Condition
They are both in very good condition and may not have been taken out of the box. Unfortunately the black vase does not fit the stand properly, the stand appears to be too small. The number on the back of the stands confirms this, one is smaller than the other. Also the box is very spotty and discoloured.
