This listing is for a pair of Kyo-ware yunomi style tea cups made around 20 years ago by Kotoura Gama.  They are wheel-thrown and coated in glossy green glaze with small winding streams.  Each cup also features yellow sakura blossoms and red momiji leaves.  These cups are what we call meoto style, meaning they are two different sizes and often referred to as a husband and wife pair.

Kotoura Gama was established in 1910 by Wada Masae. At that time pieces were fired in a massive five-chambered noborigama climbing kiln, and they mainly produced raku, tenmoku and celadon wares. Unfortunately the kiln was located very close to some ancient shrines and temples, so their noborigama kiln had to be put out of operation and dismantled. These days they fire in gas and electric kilns on the same grounds where the noborigama once stood, and they are best known for their enamel overglazed porcelain accented with 24-carat gold.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
