This listing is for a pair of small sized Mino-ware rice bowls.  They are made of porcelain slip and the exterior is decorated with a dragon.  There is a legend about a koi that swam upstream through waterfalls and other obstacles to reach the top of a mountain. After reaching the top, the koi passed through the Dragon Gate and transformed into a mighty dragon.   This story is usually told when offering words of encouragement, and it’s also associated with success.  These bowls are coated with liquid glass and have a slightly textured surface.  The bottom is marked ‘Made in Japan’ and they are completely brand new bowls. 

Mino-ware refers to pottery produced in what was formerly the old Mino Province, which is modern day Gifu Prefecture. Early examples of Mino-ware were predominantly ash-glazed stoneware pieces. Later however the use of the potter’s wheel, as well as a greater variety of glazes, began to characterize what is often thought to ideally represent Mino pottery today. Larger production kilns like Kozan Gama in Gifu Prefecture produce wares similar to Imari and Arita-ware. Various other kilns specialize in producing budget priced tableware, along with high end wares for various brand name stores and franchises around the country such as Tachikichi in Kyoto.
