This listing is for a pair of Tsugaru lacquerware bowls made around 5-10 years ago. This particular type of Tsugaru pattern is known as ‘Kara Nuri”. Kara Nuri is characterized by its smooth speckled appearance made with layers of sanded and polished lacquer. The bowls in this listing are made of wood and the exterior of one is coated in red whilst the other features dark coloured lacquer. They come with their original paper storage box as well as a Japanese language profile paper about Tsugaru lacquerware.

Tsugaru lacquerware refers to high quality lacquer pieces produced in Aomori Prefecture. This particular type of lacquerware goes back as far as the late 1600s, when a local feudal lord ordered craftsmen to create wares that were not only beautiful, but also suitable for everyday use. Each piece is made using cypress and requires more than 40 steps to complete. It takes around 60 days to complete one piece from start to finish, this process includes foundation making, whetting, lacquering and polishing. Tsugaru pieces are considered robust yet elegant, they have a beautiful lustre and include seasonal floral patterns.
