This listing is for a pair of wooden ornaments made around 30 years ago.  From the front they look like masks, but they have a solid filled back so they’re actually just an ornament of sorts.  Both pieces feature the kanji 王 which is pronounced as ‘o’ and translates as ‘king’.  I wasn’t able to find much information but I feel that that may be connected to bugaku, bugaku are dances from legendary Chinese warrior kings which have been performed throughout Japan since the Heian period.  The green ornament has a royal crest above the 王 kanji; this twin tomoe crest is used at bugaku performances.  There are no hooks or string, and the bearded part on the bottom is not flat so they do not stand up on their own.  It’s best to pop them on a shelf leaning against a wall.

Red:  14.3cm (5.6”) from top to bottom x 11.4cm (4.4”) across x 5.2cm (2”) from back to front

Green:  14.3cm (5.6”) from top to bottom x 11.9cm (4.6”) across x 5.9cm (2.3”) from back to front

Condition

Both items are in very good condition, the red one however has some scuffing and loss of paint, and the green mask has some scuffing and a little dust build up, as well as some loss of paint.
